How Tare handles your data.
Tare is operated by SSPC HOLDINGS PTY LTD.
We collect and process only the data needed for the account and features you choose. This policy distinguishes data kept by Tare from data sent temporarily to service providers to complete a request.
This page is plain-English. The legal terms are in Terms of Use.
What we collect.
- Account identifiers — your Supabase account ID and email address for sign-in, account recovery, security and requested messages.
- Saved shopping data — favourites, pantry items, custom lists and related product interactions when you choose an account-backed sync feature.
- Search and shopping context — the current query, selected product IDs, list counts, favourite categories and a short set of recent item names may be sent when you ask Tare AI and enable personalised recommendations.
- AI prompts — the question you submit to Ask Tare and the answer returned for that request.
- Voice search audio — when you choose voice search, microphone audio is processed by Apple or Google speech-recognition services. Tare receives the transcript, not the recording, and does not store the audio.
- Product photos and report details — a photo may be sent for AI reading. If you submit it as a product update report, the photo, OCR text, price and report details are stored privately for moderation.
- Address and matched coordinates — an address, suburb or postcode you enter, and the coordinates returned for that match, are processed only when you search for nearby stores.
AI and operational providers.
Supabase provides account, database, private storage and Edge Function infrastructure. Address searches are processed by OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service. Waitlist, deletion and support requests are processed by our hosting and mail providers so we can respond.
Ask Tare prompts, compact shopping/search context and product photos selected for AI reading pass through a Tare-controlled Supabase Edge Function to the Google Gemini API. We do not send your email address or Tare account ID to Gemini. The call is stateless: Tare does not use Gemini's Files, caching or Interactions storage features.
Tare AI is released only with a billing-enabled Gemini API project. We do not opt in to sharing prompts or responses for model improvement. Under Google's paid-service terms, Google does not use those inputs or outputs to improve its products, but may retain them for up to 55 days for abuse monitoring and legal or regulatory obligations. Tare does not claim zero data retention. See Gemini API terms and abuse-monitoring information.
We are not adding website analytics, advertising pixels or brokered tracking tags for launch.
What stays on your phone.
- Recent search history is stored locally for repeat lookups. It is not uploaded as a search-history log; only the current query may be included in an AI request you make.
- Purchase history and daily patterns stay local unless a feature clearly asks to use a compact part of that shopping context for personalisation.
- Basket contents stay local except for the product identifiers needed when you explicitly request a comparison or AI answer.
- Saved coordinates and address labels stay in app settings. An address query is sent to OpenStreetMap Nominatim only to return a match. Tare does not request your device location, and saved coordinates are not sent to Gemini.
Storage and deletion.
- Ask Tare requests — Tare's application database does not save prompts, AI-reading photos or responses merely because they were sent for an AI request.
- Product update reports — private photos and report records remain until the report or account is deleted, or Tare removes them under its moderation lifecycle.
- Account deletion — report records and storage objects must be removed before the account record can be deleted, preventing orphaned photos.
- Provider retention — providers may retain security, request and abuse-monitoring records under their own terms and legal obligations.
Aggregated, non-personal data.
Tare's business is built on the price data we collect from retailer websites — public prices that hold no personal information. We license this market data, and the product-level analytics we derive from it (for example, "olive oil 1L has moved 12% over ninety days"), to researchers, media, analysts and other organisations. None of it carries a user dimension. None of it is about you.
If we ever publish an aggregate that draws on app usage, it is protected before it leaves: no group smaller than 50 people is ever surfaced, small groups are suppressed, and dates are binned to the month. The result can't be traced back to a person.
We publish an annual transparency report listing every data product we license and who licenses it.
What we'll never do.
- Sell your personal data, or share it with retailers or advertising brokers
- Use your data to target ads
- Take affiliate commissions on products you add to your list
- Push you notifications about deals that aren't actually deals
Your rights.
Under the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) and equivalent frameworks, you have the right to:
- Request access to the data we hold about you
- Correct anything that's wrong
- Delete your account and associated app data from Settings → Login & security → Delete account, or through the public deletion form. Verified requests are handled within 30 days.
- Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) if you're unhappy with our response.
