What Tare's price signals mean.
Tare turns retailer-published price data into practical shopping guidance. This page explains the source, coverage and limits behind that guidance.
THE INPUT
Retailer-published prices.
Tare collects prices published by Australian retailers and links them to products so current observations can be compared with available history. Tare is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting for any retailer.
Product, retailer, store and location coverage varies. Price freshness also varies because retailers publish and update information on different schedules.
THE PROCESS
From observation to guidance.
Collect
Capture retailer-published product and price observations with source and update details where available.
Compare
Compare the current observation with that product's available history, up to twelve months where the evidence supports it.
Explain
Present the current price, range context, evidence strength and a plain shopping signal without claiming retailer intent.
COVERAGE
History is product-specific.
- Up to twelve months - longer history is used only where supported for that product and retailer.
- Coverage and freshness - some products, stores or periods may have fewer observations or delayed updates.
- Thin history - limited evidence is handled neutrally. Tare reduces confidence or withholds a strong verdict rather than treating missing data as a deal.
- Product matching - pack size, variant or retailer listing changes can affect comparisons, so source details matter.
INTERPRETATION
Guidance, not a guarantee.
A Tare verdict describes how a current observed price compares with the history available for that product. It does not guarantee availability, future prices, savings or the price charged at a particular store.
The retailer's current shelf, app or checkout price is authoritative when you buy. Check retailer conditions, member-price requirements, location differences, pack size and availability before deciding.
Tare describes observed pricing patterns. It does not claim to know why a retailer changed a price, whether a promotion was intended to mislead, or what a retailer will do next.
PUBLISHED STATISTICS
Every public number needs context.
When Tare publishes an index, trend or market statistic, it should identify the publication date, observation period, sample or product set, retailer and location coverage, calculation method, and material exclusions or limitations.
Results from one sample or period should not be read as universal. Updates may change as coverage improves, product matches are corrected or newer retailer-published observations arrive.
